Georgetown, a city of some 50,000 residents, is located in Central Texas, approximately thirty-five miles north of downtown Austin and is the seat of Williamson County, currently the fastest growing county in the United States according to Forbes Magazine.
Incorporated in 1848, the historic downtown district is centered on the charming court house square. The square is surrounded by the beautifully restored Victorian-era storefronts that house boutique shops, restaurants, and business offices. There are more than 180 National Registered Historic homes and buildings in the city.
Since its founding, Georgetown has served as a bustling commerce center in the area. During the late nineteenth century the cattle industry caused Georgetown to thrive when more than five million cattle and a million mustangs were herded up the Chisholm Trail, which passed through Georgetown from 1867 through 1885. Today, Georgetown is an eclectic blend of yesteryear and present day, with something to offer anyone who makes the City home.
Georgetown is home to Southwestern University, the oldest university in Texas, which was founded in 1840 and which is situated on a beautiful tree lined campus south of downtown.
Georgetown is well known for its dedication to its beautiful parks and recreational amenities. There are nearly nine miles of hike and bike trails along the picturesque North and South San Gabriel Rivers as well as a 1.6 mile granite trail that loops around San Gabriel Park. San Gabriel Park is full of ball fields, picnic areas, and playgrounds, as well as Blue Hole for swimming. On the west part of the City, beautiful Lake Georgetown is a popular venue for swimming, fishing and boating activities.
The Georgetown area is readily accessible to the nearby employment, business, and transportation centers as well as to the diverse larger metro Austin area and close by Hill Country by way IH 35, the SH 130 Toll Road, SH 195, SH 29, all of which travel to and through Georgetown.
